It's Just Not Working Out...

I recently noticed, that my "Finished Products of the Month" posts seem to get the most feed back, so in the same vein, I present to you the "Products that are Just not Working out" - This can be viewed as Things I Regret Buying - Skin Care Edition
I am posting these because I have huge doubts on me ever actually finishing some of these products...

A lot of name brands. I don't mean to hate, I just want to share my honest experiences on things that I know have high acclaim that just did not work for me

Boscia Luminizing Black Masque: I believe this is one of Boscia's best selling products...
I just, don't see it. You apply this as a thick black mask, I mean CHARCOAL BLACK, you do not want to have company over anytime soon! Let the mask dry, and peel off.
The peeling depending on layer of thickness is difficult. Some parts come off easily, some parts take longer to dry, and if your skin is sensitive, it may hurt. I did not really mind any of this so long as the result was worth while.
I would rinse the remnants I was unable to peel and it would reveal admit tingly slightly more glowing skin, but...what mask after you apply it and wash it off doesn't offer a slight improvement? It is just the top layer being peeled and washed. I am actually almost finished with this tube, and have found no gained luminosity.
I think this mask is only beneficial to those who have very minor skin issues and just want a pick me up, but for me it was a bit too much work, with results not worthy enough for a re purchase.

Khiel's Daily Skin Clearing Treatment: I used about half this tube when I realized, this was doing nothing for me. Salicylic Acid to prevent new spots from appearing. I have had more spots appearing since purchasing this months ago, my marks do not fade quicker as it promises, and I feel this is an additional step. I think many La Roche Posay products beat this any day!

Estee Lauder Idealist: A product I actually did finish. This is bottle number 2 ( a gift...) If you have never felt silicone on your face you may think this is a miracle skin smoothing product. If you have ever applied primer to your face, then you may wonder why you are putting on a primer so early in your skin care routine.
I have used this on and off for about a year, and never saw an actual decrease in my pores, just a nice *slick* feeling which I know are just the silicone products.
I am interested to try EL new Skin Toner Correcting Serum, but for me, this was a fail, which I now must repeat in bottle number 2.

Philosophy's Hope in a Bottle: My 1st Philosophy product. I bought this years ago, the sample size. After years of having this in my collection, the mini size, and seeing it half full before *now throwing it in the trash* I realize I did not like this product at all.
Designed for more spotty skin, this moisturizer was not very hydrating on my combination skin, and I feel Burts Bees Acne Moisturizer while not the most moisturizing item on the market, far out beats all the claims this more expensive product claims with the same aims.

Korres White Tea Gel Cleanser: I was sooo excited to try this. I wanted to love this, but I don't. To me this was the Natural, Greek, scented version of Cetaphil. Soaps that just"clean"the outer most surface of your skin. No penetration, minimal lather, just simple. IF you are a simple person who likes brands such as Cetaphil but wish to go the more natural and paraben free route, this may be for you. The scent is ok, but this just doesn't fulfill the things I am looking for in a face wash. Very gentle but I don't think it would work on very dry skin as it seems to help balance combo skin towards normalcy.

Origins Ginzing: This was my fault. This eye cream does exactly what it claims. I am actually thankfully nearly done with this. It really does help brighten those AM eyes, de puffs slightly and just makes you look more awake. It never claimed to do anything outside that, but I do wish it was more moisturizing. I see with the new fall weather my eye area becoming incredibly dry, and I am hoping to finish this soon so I can move on to a more hydrating formula.
If you find in the morning your eyes look reminiscent to zombie like, this may help!

Last but not least

My most regrettable purchase

Benefit's Ultra Radiance: I have used this Radiance Spray 2x. That's right, twice. That's it, and I know I hate it. Why? I used it in 2 different seasons, with two different moisturizers and gave myself a radiance spritz to find a huge amount of pain! Every time I used this product my face would hurt sooooooooo bad, and would become red and inflamed. I want to chuck this out the window. This product alone make me weary of the whole Benefit Skin care line

So, from all my skin care adventures this year, these are the items that remain in my collection that I stare at with regret.

What are some of your skin care regrets?

  1. would you be willing to sell me your unused items? :) let me know!

  2. I have a lot of these 'regrets' too! Sometimes I don't even know whether it is appropriate to throw them away, when it's like half bottle full - it seems not very sanitary to gift them to friends.. (Sigh)... Maybe I should evaluate my collection and handle some of those (or blog about them like you do)....

    Cheers,

  3. Eeee the whole pain thing really freaks me out. I have SUCH sensitive skin and thanks to your (*ahem* bad) influence (just kidding) I've been lemming every skincare line under the sun. Benefit's skincare line did seem really promising, but pain?! The last thing I would want when spraying a facial mist is stinging!

  4. I had a sample size of Hope in a Jar and I didn't like the scent at all. I don't think it was overly moisturizing either, however, I have very dry skin so I usually use a heavy cream especially in the Fall/Winter season.

  5. I was super disappointedas I have always had good luck with face sprays. The same day I bought a mini benefit trial skin care set which I never opened due to the above experience. Trial and error im afraid!

  6. i know if they are half done i put them away for maybe later if i like them enough but if i hate them i just stare at them for a while and realize they prob expired years ago. It feels refreshing to throw them away though! the ones i dont enjoy of course. Skin care is unfortunately a long journey for some bf they find their HG products!

  7. I didn't like the Boscia mask either - it stung when I applied it, and continued to sting until I couldn't take it and had to wash it off after about 3 minutes. The MAC black mask was loads better. I've steered clear of the Benefit skincare line because it smelled so perfumey - I was certain it would break me out! I also dislike the Philosophy "Hope in a..." products - soooo overhyped/overrated! I will say Philosophy makes nice cleansers though. My fave they make is the Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash (seriously, love it) and Purity Made Simple is nice, too.

  8. woah I'd hate to have that silicone feeling, hence i avoid a lot of primers.... thanks the heads up on that. shame to hear about the benfit product, it seemed to be raved by a lot of the people. I'm lucky that I javen't regretted a lot of skin care buys since I'm very picky about it but if I had to choose it would be effaclar K i bought from the UK - it didn't work but I recently re-purchased the Asian version and it's amazing!!

  9. For some reason Ive always been wary of Benefit...Im staying away from the skin care!
You are also so right about the Idealist, its a nice product but it really is just an expensive bottle of nice smelling silicones!

  10. I love to hear honest reviews like this, I've tried some bits and pieces from the Benefit line and found they hurt my skin, too:( Too bad about the Korres cleanser, the idea and packaging seem really nice. I suppose everyones skin is different, but I find it useful to hear the good AND the bad on a blog, so thank you:)

  11. Oh my goodness, pain from the radiance spray? >< OUCH. Thank you so much for these types of posts. Skin can be so tricky to maintain with its upkeep. But I guess the fun and also not so fun part is the search for the right skin care items!

  12. I was thinking of trying out that Kiehl's acne "treatment" cream but after this post, I won't! haha

And a little insider tip for Korres from a greek girl: Korres is very overestimated outside of Greece. And overpriced, too... Sure, some of their products are fine but I've used so many Korres products and I can honestly say that for ex. 35$ for the Wild Rose moisturiser is waaay to much for its quality! Apivita is the second best selling greek brand in Greece and their products are much more well-made than those of Korres. In any case, if you're interested in buying Either Korres or Apivita for less, I would recommend you the online pharmacy shop www.pharmacy4u.gr - their prices are insane! Just for reference, the same Wild Rose moisturiser is listed for aprox. 17,5 dollars! Hope I helped you out in some way xx xx

  13. Thanks so much for the warning about GinZing! I wanted to try it but I definitely need some moisture around my eyes. I completely agree about the Boscia Black mask. It only gives me a temporary "glow" (aka redness?) at best, and at worst kind of hurts. No long-term benefits I could see and I used up two tubes. You must be allergic to something in the Ultra Radiance, I'm sure it shouldn't hurt. But now I will definitely steer clear, so thanks! I'm using Effaclar Duo from La Roche Posay and at first I LOVED it. It made me little dry and flaky, but it cleared up my skin in week 1. However, since week 2 (I'm now on week 3...) I've had massive, inflamed red whitehead zits (5 or so at a time) whereas I usually just have non-inflamed whiteheads and a lot of clogged pores... the clogged pores are still gone but I wonder if anybody else had this happen and will it go away soon?

  14. I'm using the Boscia Black Mask as well (thankfully I got it in a mini size) and I don't see a difference either. I don't find it hard to work with but the effects just aren't drastic enough for me to want to pay for the full size. I'm glad you talked about the Kiehl's treatment in comparison to La Roche Posay because now I'll opt for LRP Effaclar instead of the Kiehl's once my current acne treatment runs out. Do you think it makes sense if I were to use Ginzing in the morning and a separate, hydrating eye cream at night? I know Ginzing has light reflecting pigments in it or something so I don't want to use that as an evening eye cream :/

  15. I absolutely love reading your posts, all of them, and these monthly ones are some of my favorites (but I love your Sunday random posts!). I really really agree w/you on the EL Idealist pore minimizer thing! Ugh. It's totally siliconey, and the only good out of it is that it is scented nicely.

I've never tried the Boscia mask before, but I bet i wouldn't see a difference :p i'm also really weary of cleansers that take the "natural" route but don't do anything beneficial for the skin. I bet the Korres facial wash was pretty expensive :p

  16. ooh i hate when that happens. i think it happens more frequently with skincare than with makeup products since everyone's skin is so different. I was going to try Kiel's Daily Skin Clearing Treatment but after reading this I think I'll pass on it, especially since it's not that cheap. DId you try the LRP duo or K? and I'm dying to try the new estee lauder idealist o_O and see if it does give results in 2 weeks lol

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's great to hear about the ones that don't work!
Now that I think about I think you're right about the Ginzing...But I don't need too much moisture under my eye area yet (maybe more when the weather becomes more harsh)
I was actually looking forward to maybe trying the benefit spray, now I think I'll probably stay away from it FOREVER ._. Did you figure out what was in it that caused the burning?

I bought the La Roche Posay acne treatment you mentioned before. I think it does help but boy does benzol peroxide dry up and make my skin sooo patch! I don't remember it feeling this rough in a long time...Nothing seems to moisturize it. Did you have this problem as well? :(

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh i have only swatched Hope in a Jar and I thought it felt too greasy for myself so I never got to try it =( Good luck on your winter cream search!!

  19. HAAAAAAAA glad im not alone about the mask. I was like I know this is one of their BEST products, and I kept thinking, maybe Im using it wrong??
I have always wanted to try their washes! I recently sniffed purity and was turned off, so unsure if I would try it haha

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, im not a silicone fan either! I usually purchase silicone free primers ( which I need for my skin type) Everyone has been raving about Effeclar K and its def on my list to buy once I fin the Duo! the UK and Asia has diff versions? I know for the Effeclar Duo the US and the rest of the world has diff versions. I wonder why they have so many formulations for the same products!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yea!!! i really regret that spray! That same day i bought a mini trial sized version of their skin care line which i have NOT TOUCHED in absolute fear! the items are packaged in cute containers but i dont think I will risk it haha

    ReplyDelete
  22. awww thank you for your comment. I know there are alot of curious ppl out there to branch out in skin care and there are sooo many products on the mkt it's hard to choose, esp when you hear so many raves online! The benefit line, I only tried 1 thing, but was a complete fail so I would not try anything else. Yeah, I can use up the korres cleanser after an oil make up remover or something, just to use it up =\

    ReplyDelete
  23. WOW thank you soo much!!!! i absolutely loved the IDEA of Korres but when I tried it I was so dissapointed, and I even wanted the moisturizer! glad I did not try it! thanks so much for the link!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. yes it was def an OUCH moment that I went through twice!! I will keep searching for HG's and inform you all on my journey!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Np! Yup maybe Ginzing is nice in the warmer months, but I would avoid it now that it is so much cooler! Ditto on the mask!!! why do so many ppl rave about it =(
Hmmmm you skin may be purging after using the LRP? Are you in the US? I know that outside the US the formula is actually different which is nuts to me...
To me, it sounds like the clogged pores and non inflamed white heads may have surfaced bc the product brought them up to exposure so they can be removed. Usually purging BLOWS but Im usually ok with it bc I know the end result will result in far better skin.
If you blv you are having an allergy to LRP Duo, maybe take a break from it and let your current spots heal. Then maybe go back to it slowly perhaps once a day every 3rd day and build up to see if the reaction re occurs.
Once the spots are fully gone, try a super mild exfoliator to remove the dead skin so they don't create more spots and keep the area very clean + hydrated, flaky skin looks bad under ALL make up
I'm sorry your skin is having issues at the moment, we have all been there - I am purging too ( new clarasonic brush head is working!) hehehe so u are not alone dear!!

  26. Seems alot of ppl are dissapointed in this mask! Yup you can def use this eye cream in the AM so long as your PM night cream is hydrating enough! Usually at night I use anti wrinkle cream, and in the AM I use a hydrating cream, but I purchased this just to try something new. I just recently purchased my old faithful Clinique all about eyes Rich and will be using that in conjunction with the origins in the AM until I am finished with the origins. There is nothing wrong with adding in diff eye creams or layering eye creams for the optimal effect =D

  27. awwwwwwwww thanks so much!!! i seriously don't know if ppl like those Sunday random posts! they're all so... RANDOM haha.
Yeah, I would recommend trying another mask as the Boscia one was kinda a let down =( which is a shame bc I do like some of their other products, but no brand is perfect.
The Korres I think was $21? I THINK I can use it up =P after I wash off my make up with a make up oil I can use it afterwards to just remove the access before I'm ready for my actual night time routine. Hopefully eventually I will get through the bottle haha

  28. Skin care is tricky!!!! You think am i purging? is it getting better? are the spots going away? am i glowing? hahahaha I use the Effeclar Duo, and will be trying the Effeclar K next! Cant wait!
Yes I want to try the new idealist to help heal my post acne marks but I want to fin my current idealist first so i dont have too many serums lying around, since they take so long to finish

    ReplyDelete
  29. yeah! i love reading about things that ppl would not repurchase! it's quite useful to hear another side of the story since everyone's skin is different. gluck if you try ginzing =) it lasted me about 6 months! I never figured out what caused the burning, I stare at that product with complete distaste!
Hmm dry patches eh? Yea that can happ. How often are u using it? If you use it every night, maybe try once every other night, and maybe you are applying too much. I know if I have spots i put alot more on than I need which dosent help things, its just a mental thing! try spreading a thin layer every other night only on the effected areas, and in the AM try using a very mild cleanser with micro beads in it. This way, whatever flakes occured during the night you can sloth off very gently in the morning so there will be no dead skin build up and try to help with the dry patches.

That actually does happ to me when I am spotty and use it 2x a day and LOADS of it. I usually go back to once a night and far less, add a heavier moisturizer, and the clarasonic, and I'm usually fixed in about 2 days.

    Hope that helps dear!

  30. The way you use it and the scent is different. I couldn't even finish the UK one. I started using it about week ahead and I definitely see quick results. Will be interesting to see how you get on with the US version!

    ReplyDelete
  31. shame you didn't like the benefit spray - just goes to show skin care is so different for every one. great to hear about products that 'didn't work' .. honest reviews are always best! x

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hmm, I think I probably regret anything that was sold in an "oil-free" version and I bought the regular version. I have come to realize that I need the oil-free one regardless of season because it really makes a huge difference on my face. Thanks for the in-depth reviews! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. In many cases, women's shelters and drop-in centres will take lightly used makeup and skin care products. Give it a go!

  34. oh wow great review, you should try the shu uemura deepsea mist (: im sure you like that,, !! they have a nice range for different skin types (:!!

  36. aw thanks so much for such a nice comment, i always try to be honest, there are sooo many products out there that all sounds too good to be true!

    ReplyDelete
  37. i still have yet to learn that lesson!!! but i agree oil free all the way!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I totally agree. I'm not sure if I believe the idea of purging though o_o I feel like it just gets worse and never better after the breakouts >_< and lol how funny. I have the Effeclar K and want to try out the duo next!
